Online Baccarat in Canada: Rules and Where to Play
How online baccarat works
Baccarat is a card game in which you bet on which of two hands, Player or Banker, will finish closer to nine, or whether they will tie. In the common Punto Banco version, the cards and any third-card draws follow fixed rules. You choose a bet and its size; you do not decide whether either hand takes another card.
This guide explains scoring, drawing rules, payouts, online and live-dealer formats, and the checks Canadian readers should make before playing for money. The casino links below retain this site’s existing referral routes. A listing does not confirm that baccarat, a promotion or real-money access is available to your account or province.

Baccarat rules and card values
In Punto Banco, two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. These labels name the hands, not the people at the table. You can bet on either hand regardless of where you sit. The hand closest to nine wins after the drawing rules have been applied; equal totals produce a tie.
- Aces count as one point.
- Cards from two through nine count at face value.
- Tens, jacks, queens and kings count as zero.
- Only the last digit of a total matters. Seven plus eight is 15, so the hand is worth five.
Each hand starts with two cards and can receive at most one more. A two-card eight or nine is called a natural and stops the drawing phase. The MGM GameSense baccarat guide sets out the standard Punto Banco draw chart. Always check the help screen for the exact online table because side bets and no-commission variants can change the payout rules.
Player, Banker and Tie bets
A Player bet wins if the Player hand finishes higher. A Banker bet wins if the Banker hand finishes higher. In standard commission baccarat, either winning main bet pays even money, but the casino commonly takes a commission of up to five percent from a winning Banker bet. If the hands tie, standard Player and Banker bets push, meaning the stakes are returned.
A Tie bet wins only when both hands finish on the same total. Its displayed payout is higher than the main bets, often 8:1, but the exact value depends on the table. A larger headline payout does not by itself mean better value. Read the game’s paytable, which also determines whether a side bet or no-commission version changes the normal rules.
For a simple commission example, a C$20 winning Banker bet at even money would earn C$20 before a five-percent commission. The commission is C$1, leaving C$19 profit plus the C$20 stake returned. This example explains the arithmetic; the table’s own terms control its payout.
No betting pattern can change the fixed draw rules or make a future hand due to win. A run of Banker results does not tell you that Player must be next. Think of the house edge and commission as costs of play, and compare the exact paytables before choosing a variant. The Venetian’s baccarat guide also distinguishes standard and no-commission play.
When is a third card dealt?
After the initial two cards, a natural eight or nine on either hand ends the round without another card. Otherwise, the Player hand draws on totals zero through five and stands on six or seven. The Banker hand’s rule is more detailed: whether it draws can depend on its total and, if Player drew, the value of Player’s third card. The dealer or game software applies this rule automatically.
You do not need to memorise the full Banker chart to place a bet, but you should know that the third card is not a choice you make. The old guide suggested that a player’s choices depend on the cards dealt; that is misleading for Punto Banco. Check the game instructions if you are using a different baccarat variant.
A round in five steps
- Choose Player, Banker or Tie, and confirm the stake and paytable.
- Two cards are dealt to each hand.
- The game checks for a natural eight or nine.
- Any permitted third card is dealt under the fixed table rules.
- The final totals are compared and winning bets are settled.
Online baccarat and live dealer baccarat
An online digital baccarat game shows simulated cards and resolves the hand using its programmed rules and random number generator. A live dealer table streams cards dealt by a person, with bets placed through the screen. Both can use the same core Punto Banco rules, but minimum stakes, speed, side bets and commission may differ. Some live tables do not offer a free demo mode.
Before playing, open the lobby entry and read the table limits, payout schedule and whether the game is available on your device. If a table offers a no-commission Banker bet, identify what substitutes for the commission; some variants reduce the payout for particular Banker wins. Do not assume the label “no commission” means better value.
On a phone, make sure the betting areas and game history are readable without accidental taps. Live video requires a reliable connection and may use more data than a digital game. Our mobile casino guide, Android and iPhone pages cover device checks.
Bonuses and payments for baccarat
A casino welcome offer does not necessarily apply to baccarat in the same way it applies to slots. Table games may contribute less toward a wagering requirement or be excluded. Before accepting a bonus, check whether digital or live baccarat qualifies, the contribution percentage, maximum bet, expiry and withdrawal restrictions. If those terms do not suit your play, ask whether you can decline the offer. Our casino bonus guide explains these checks.
Confirm the account currency, deposit and withdrawal methods, verification requirements and any fees before funding an account. A method accepted for deposits may not support cashouts. See our CAD guide and Visa, Mastercard and Neteller pages for payment considerations.
The casino listings above are starting points for comparison, not a promise that every listed operator currently offers baccarat to all Canadians. Open the current lobby and terms before registering. Our blackjack and roulette guides cover other table games if you want to compare their rules.
Eligibility and safer play in Canada
Online gambling rules and operator availability depend on your province. Check your local requirements and the operator’s current terms. Ontario readers can use the iGaming Ontario operator directory to identify sites offered by regulated operators. A Canadian-themed page or an affiliate listing is not proof of provincial authorisation.
Set a spending and time limit before play, and treat any loss as a cost of entertainment. Increasing a bet after a loss does not improve the next hand’s chance of winning. The Responsible Gambling Council recommends keeping gambling within a budget and not expecting to win back losses. Our responsible gambling guide points to help if play becomes hard to manage.
Online baccarat FAQs
What is the goal of baccarat?
Bet on whether the Player hand, Banker hand or a tie will result. After fixed drawing rules are applied, the hand closer to nine wins.
Do I control the Player hand?
No. “Player” names one of the hands. In Punto Banco, you choose a wager, and the game applies the drawing rules automatically.
What do face cards count as?
Tens, jacks, queens and kings count as zero. Aces count as one, and cards two through nine count at face value.
What is a natural in baccarat?
A natural is an initial two-card total of eight or nine. No third cards are drawn after a natural under standard Punto Banco rules.
When does the Player hand draw a third card?
Without a natural, it draws on totals zero through five and stands on six or seven. Banker’s rule also depends on its total and sometimes Player’s third card.
Why is there a commission on Banker wins?
The Banker hand is slightly more likely to win under standard rules. Many tables take up to five percent from winning Banker bets; check the exact paytable.
Does a Tie bet pay more?
It generally offers a higher payout because ties occur less often. Check the displayed payout and the game’s rules before betting.
Does a casino bonus count toward baccarat play?
That depends on the offer. Baccarat may contribute less to wagering or be excluded, particularly in live play. Read the current bonus terms.
Can I play baccarat on a phone?
Many digital and live games support mobile devices, but availability, controls and limits vary. Check the exact game on your phone before depositing.
Are the listed casinos available in my province?
The listings do not establish eligibility. Check the operator’s current terms and your provincial rules; Ontario readers can consult iGaming Ontario’s operator directory.
