Compare Online Casino Games by Type

These categories differ in their rules and the decisions involved. This comparison explains gameplay; it does not rank games by likely profit or promise a winning outcome.

Use these introductions to compare the aim of each game, the choices involved and the rules worth checking. Follow the guide links for more information about each category.

Baccarat

Baccarat compares two hands called Player and Banker. You choose which hand will finish closer to nine, or bet on a tie; those labels do not mean you receive a personal hand. Only the final digit of the card total counts, and fixed rules decide whether either hand receives another card. Before playing, check the Banker commission, Tie payout and any special rules for the version you have selected. Read our baccarat guide.

Blackjack

In blackjack, you play against the dealer rather than other players. The aim is to finish with a higher total without exceeding 21; going over 21 is a bust. You can take another card by hitting or keep your total by standing, with doubling and splitting available under certain rules. Compare the blackjack payout, the dealer's drawing rules and the permitted actions before choosing a table. Explore our blackjack guide.

Craps

Craps uses two dice and a table of bets on their results. For a standard Pass Line bet, a 7 or 11 on the opening come-out roll wins, while 2, 3 or 12 loses. A roll of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 sets a point; the bet then wins if that point appears again before a 7. Other wagers have different conditions and payouts, so distinguish the opening roll from the rolls that follow. Read our craps guide.

Keno

Keno is a number-draw game: you pick numbers, then compare your selection with the numbers drawn at random. Your payout depends on how many numbers you selected, how many match and the game's paytable. Check the number range, selection limits and prize chart before a draw. Choosing birthdays, favourite numbers or results from previous draws does not make those numbers more likely to appear. There is no number-picking system that can predict a random draw. Explore our keno guide.

Roulette

Roulette centres on a spinning wheel and a ball that settles in one numbered pocket. Bets can cover a single number, a group of numbers, or categories such as red or black and odd or even. Check the wheel layout, including its zero pockets, and the published payout for each bet before choosing a version. A display of previous results is not a forecast: past spins do not determine where the ball will land next. Read our roulette guide.

Poker

In player-versus-player poker, you compete for a shared pot rather than trying to beat a dealer's hand. In Texas Hold'em, each player receives two private cards and shares up to five community cards. Betting rounds give you opportunities to check, bet, call, raise or fold when the rules allow. At showdown, the strongest five-card hand wins, with tied winning hands sharing the pot. A hand can also end when all but one player folds. Check which poker format you are joining, as these rules describe Texas Hold'em. Explore our online poker guide.

Rules reference: PokerStars Learn: Texas Hold'em rules.

Sic Bo

Sic Bo uses three dice, with bets placed before each roll. You can bet on totals, individual numbers or combinations such as pairs and triples. In standard rules, Small covers totals from 4 to 10 and Big covers 11 to 17, but either bet loses if the dice show a triple. The displayed paytable matters because different bet types offer different payouts and chances of winning. Check both the qualifying result and its payout rather than comparing prize amounts alone. Read our Sic Bo guide.

Rules reference: OLG PlaySmart: Sic Bo rules; OLG PlaySmart: Sic Bo bet types.

Slots

Slots award prizes when symbols meet the combinations shown in a game's paytable. Check how winning combinations are formed, whether special symbols trigger features and the cost of a spin at your chosen settings. Themes and animations describe the presentation, not your chances of winning. Outcomes are random, and a run of losing spins does not make a win due. Before deciding whether to play, use the game rules to understand its reels, paylines and payout conditions. Explore our online slots guide.

Rules reference: OLG PlaySmart: how slots work.

Video Poker

Video poker combines a five-card poker hand with a paytable rather than a contest against other players. After the initial deal, you choose which cards to hold and draw replacements for the rest. The final hand is then checked against the game's qualifying hands. Variants can change the rules; for example, Deuces Wild treats twos as wild cards. Review the paytable before playing, since it sets the payout for each qualifying hand. Your hold decisions affect the final hand and its potential payout. Read our video poker guide.

These are general game introductions, not confirmation that a particular casino offers a game or accepts players in your location. The rules and paytable inside the specific game take priority.

Browser-Based and Mobile Casino Games

Before selecting a game, check its supported browsers, operating systems and screen requirements. Confirm whether it opens in the browser, needs an app or provides both options. The operator's help pages should explain any account or location checks.

A mobile casino guide can help you identify questions to ask, but it does not replace the current requirements for your device. Where a demo is available and you are eligible to use it, inspect the controls and rules without mistaking demo results for a forecast of real-money play.

Read the Paytable Before Playing

Check the game's rules, minimum and maximum stake, payout schedule and any special conditions. Games with similar names or artwork can have different rules or payout configurations. For card games, the permitted decisions and payout rules are part of the comparison, not just the game's name.

Return to player describes a long-run average, not a prediction of your session. Individual results can differ substantially, and increasing play does not guarantee that losses will be recovered. OLG PlaySmart explains why a slot's payout percentage is not a personal repayment guarantee.

Check Availability and Eligibility in Canada

Check the relevant official register, the exact operator domain and the eligibility terms for your location. In Ontario, iGaming Ontario's directory covers sites from contracted operators and notes OLG.ca separately. The directory specifies that players must be at least 19 and physically in Ontario to play on those sites. Read the official Ontario directory and its requirements.

Do not treat a reference to Canada, an overseas licence or support for CAD as confirmation that a casino is authorised to serve your province. Check with the appropriate provincial authority before opening an account.

CAD Accounts and Payment Terms

Check the account currency, available deposit and withdrawal methods, fees, conversion charges and identity-verification requirements. A payment option listed on a review page may not be available for every account or transaction. Read the operator's current cashier information rather than assuming deposits or withdrawals will be instant.

Use the CAD casino guide as a starting point for questions about currency, then confirm the terms with the operator and your payment provider.

Set Limits and Know Where to Get Support

Gambling involves a risk of losing money. Set time and spending limits before playing, do not chase losses and use time-out or self-exclusion tools when you need a break. Gambling is not a reliable way to earn income. Visit our responsible-gambling and support page for official resources.

Online Casino Games: Frequently Asked Questions

What online casino games can I learn about here?

This site has guides to slots, blackjack, roulette, baccarat, video poker, poker, craps, keno and Sic Bo. Start with the game comparison to see how the main categories differ. A guide does not confirm that every listed casino offers that game.

Can I try online casino games for free?

Check whether the particular game offers a demo mode and whether you are eligible to access it. Demo credits are not cash and cannot be withdrawn. A demo is different from a casino bonus, which may have deposit, wagering and eligibility conditions.

Do I need to download an app to play?

Check the operator's supported browsers and devices. A browser-based game does not require a separate game app, but that does not mean every game or feature is available on every device. Confirm the requirements for the exact game before registering.

What does return to player, or RTP, mean?

RTP describes a game's theoretical long-run return as a percentage of the total amount wagered. It is not the percentage of a deposit that an individual player is guaranteed to receive back. A higher published RTP does not guarantee a winning session. See OLG PlaySmart's explanation of slot payouts.

Can online casino games be played in Canadian dollars?

Check whether the operator supports a CAD account and whether your chosen payment method uses the same currency. Confirm fees, conversion charges, transaction limits and withdrawal conditions. An advertised CAD option alone does not establish regional eligibility.

How do I check casino availability in my province?

Use your province's official gambling authority or lottery corporation and check the exact website domain. For Ontario, consult iGaming Ontario's regulated-site directory, which also explains the separate status of OLG.ca. A listing on this website is not regulatory approval.

What is the difference between blackjack and video poker?

In blackjack, you play a hand against the dealer and decide whether to take more cards or stand, with other actions depending on the rules. In video poker, you choose cards to hold and a completed hand is evaluated against a paytable. Read the blackjack guide and video poker guide for the different formats.

Where can I find help or take a break from gambling?

Start with the responsible-gambling and support page. Ontario players can use iGaming Ontario's help resources. Outside Ontario, consult your provincial gambling authority or health service for local support and self-exclusion options.
